After a car accident, it’s hard to know what to do. At the very least, you will be upset and shaken up. You’ll be concerned about anyone who is riding in the car with you. And sometimes people are in pain and need immediate medical attention. If this ever happens to you, keep in mind four important phone calls you should make after an accident.
Call 9-1-1 First.
The police may not come to the scene for very simple car accidents, but it’s still a good idea to pick up your phone and call 9-1-1. The police may need to come out and direct traffic if your accident occurred in a high traffic area or during rush hour. For some accidents, you may need a police report to give to your insurance company. And if there are injuries, the police can get emergency personnel to you.
Alert Family and Friends.
Contact friends and family as soon as possible. You may need help getting home from the accident scene or the hospital – or just a sympathetic shoulder to cry on. Comfort may help you on your road to recovery.
Contact Your Insurance Company.
Your insurance company may require you to report accidents within a certain time period. Play it safe – call them after the accident. If the accident was not your fault, make sure you give the other driver’s insurance information
Consult with an Attorney.
Some accidents result in long-term medical conditions, lost wages, and uncompensated property damage. If you’ve been in an accident, contact an attorney. Some attorneys, like Osvaldo Rodriguez, offer free consultations and only charge a fee for this type of case if their client receives compensation. You’ll only have two years to file a personal injury lawsuit and five years to sue for property damage. What do you have to lose by at least talking to an attorney about your accident?
